Prevent Identity Theft

Tax season is a time of year when identity thieves are especially crafty and sophisticated.
They will stop at nothing to get your personal information!
This is a good time to remember to stay extra vigilant and
brush up on your cyber-hygiene practices.

Usually the thieves try to replicate an email appearing as if it comes from a trusted source.
The message then asks you to click a malicious link and redirects you to a
website designed to look like the website of a trusted source.
That link can then be used to deliver a virus or steal user information, or both.

Remember the following tips to protect yourself

Be 100% confident that the sender and the request are legitimate.
When in doubt, don't follow hyperlinks. Go to a trusted bookmark instead.
Hover over links to see the destination and compare that to the legitimate site.
Confirm the source by verifying the email address is one you know and trust
(again, hover over the hyperlink to see if it's legitimate)

Strengthen and regularly change passwords, or use a password vault,or both.

Use anti-virus software.

The IRS has issued five common things scammers do that the IRS will never do:

1 -  Call to demand immediate payment. The IRS will communicate with you via US  Mail.

2 - Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to
question or appeal the amount they say you owe.

3 - Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a
prepaid debit card or gift cards.

4 - Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

5 - Threaten to bring in local police or other law enforcement groups to arrest you for not paying.

Stay safe, and be Alert! (see what we did there?)

And remember to back up your Alert data - your data is your business.
